OUR GROWTH STRATEGY
Committing to grow responsibly by meeting the demands of our customers and the world.
Opteon™ low GWP refrigerants from Chemours are at work from farm to fork, keeping our food and our world cool in sustainable new ways.
The success of Opteon™ is being fueled by a combination of global consumer trends and new applications for low GWP refrigerants.
Storage and consumption behavior has changed.
Global demand for fresh produce is on the rise, and with it, the importance of low GWP refrigerants such as Opteon™.
Supermarkets now use the promise of fresh produce to drive business and customer loyalty in ways never before possible. Avocados, papaya, and fresh strawberries are expected as year-round offerings. This requires new refrigeration solutions to transport food safely from farm to storage, and eventually to the point of purchase.
More nontraditional retail outlets are offering fresh produce and perishables.
Now customers can shop for produce at gas stations, convenience stores, and even pharmacies. As the footprint of purchase points expands, Opteon? will be ready to meet the market’s demands.
Health and wellness movements are setting new standards that only the best and freshest ingredients satisfy. This will only lead to more demand for low GWP refrigerants like Opteon™.
Opteon™ reflects our commitment to Higher Value Chemistry and proactive innovation in the climate of regulatory requirements.
Regulatory bodies of the world are pushing governments to adopt legislation that calls for the implementation of new lower GWP products. The resulting environmental standards being put into place, such as Europe’s F-gas regulations and the EPA’s SNAP delisting program in the US, are stricter than ever.
Efforts like these are phasing out older, less sustainable refrigerants in favor of low GWP refrigerant options such as Opteon?. Chemours is the leading supplier of the world’s HFO-1234yf-based refrigerants, and as such, we pioneer advancements for customers ahead of regulatory conversion dates.
Thermo King® incorporated the Chemours R-404A replacement refrigerant Opteon™ XP44 as a lower GWP option for its transport refrigeration customers in 2014. Opteon™ XP44 was chosen because it’s adaptable to conditions that make compressor cooling difficult to manage with nearly half the GWP of R-404A.
Warehouses across Europe have already begun converting to Opteon™ XP40 as a low GWP replacement for R-404A. The XP40 formulation was specifically chosen for its 12% boost in energy efficiency, on top of its 65% reduction in GWP.
In 2014, our Opteon™ XP40, a low GWP refrigerant, was selected by Ahold to meet European F-gas regulations. It has now been installed in over 200 Ahold supermarkets across the Netherlands. We forecast that over 1,000 supermarkets and commercial refrigeration systems worldwide will use Opteon? XP40 by 2016.
Over 18 million cars are on the road this year, keeping passengers and their fresh produce cool in the summer heat with HFO-1234yf. We anticipate that Opteon™ will help reduce greenhouse gas content worldwide by as much as 300 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2025.
Many of today’s leading OEMs are currently evaluating Opteon™ 1100 for improved energy efficiency, and we’ll be ready to meet their commercial supply needs by mid-2017.
Higher Value Chemistry is central to our success as industry leaders in the cold chain.
Opteon™ refrigerants represent our commitment to becoming Higher Value Chemistry company.
Right now, Opteon™ refrigerants are cooling the warehouses and transportation systems that preserve food from farm to fork, as well as the cars that take that food home. Even the refrigerators themselves can be insulated with Opteon™ based foam.
At every step of the cold chain journey Opteon™ is there to ensure optimal temperature, to preserve the flavor, color, and nutrients of food. This is the embodiment of our focus to be a company that leads change, while responding to the changing needs and global trends of the developed and developing markets.

OPTEON™ FACILITY BREAKS GROUND
As the urgency to curb global warming grows, so does the demand for low GWP, Opteon™ HFO-1234yf-based refrigerants. While continuing to deliver on its commitment of meeting the growing demand for more sustainable refrigerants, Chemours successfully broke ground on its new Corpus Christi facility in Ingleside, Texas, in February 2017.
The state-of-the-art facility will triple production capacity of Opteon? products—improving the cold chain journey as well as boosting the local economy. Additionally, it will signify an enormous growth opportunity for Chemours, with startup expected to begin by Q3 2018.
